A few weeks in, a few weeks out

We’re going into our fifth week at school and things are going fine, I suppose. I’m not used to these lower level classes where you only do tests every few weeks. The higher level classes give me grade feedback a bit more quickly than that. I solved my dilemma of sitting with chatterboxes by simply sitting where they never will: in the middle of the classroom. There’s still a little chatter but it’s not constantly in my ear like previously. I just do not understand freshmen sometimes. Why pay $500+ for a class that you’re just going to talk through and/or play on Facebook in? I’d rather take that money and do something with it.

We had planned a Valentine’s Day shoot for this upcoming Sunday but have scrapped it because the time frame was simply too short for most people to be able to make it. We will be trying to arrange a “kids only” shoot for Mother’s Day. Not a lot of details at this time, though. It should be fun, that’s all I know. My photos from the Haiti benefit show at Boardriders Boca on 29 Jan still aren’t done processing, which sucks because I need to get them out by next week when I see Black Weather Shaman and Everymen again. Hopefully we’ll have our cards by then too so we can hand some out.

I purchased the lauded Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX lens last week and problems aside, it’s everything people claim it to be. Fast focusing, quiet, and sharp. I’ve found it to be more sharp wide open than my 50mm f/1.8D AF, but only slightly. I will test it out next week at the BWS/Everymen show in Lake Worth.

I also got my Nexus One this week and so far, I love it. Aside from spending a whole day trying to figure out why my contacts didn’t work, it’s a really nice phone. I think the vertical keyboard could have slightly larger keys but other than that, I don’t have too many problems with the phone. I’ve downloaded Swype and while I do like it, it’s not good for any non-common word with repeating letters in it such as names or words like “between”. It’s got a learning curve but it’s not too bad, just takes practice. Compared to my ex’s G1, this thing is blazing. I could tell her Android install was aging but I didn’t realize the stark difference between 1.0 and 2.1 until this week. What a year of active use and development makes.

Cats do the darnedest things – Photo of the Day #45

Cats do the darnedest things

Tonight we put a mouse in our hamster ball and tossed some treats into it. Don immediately took to it and tried to get the mouse out. It took a few tries of sticking his paw in, tipping it over with his head, pushing it, and so forth before he finally got everything out. It was a lot of fun watching him try to figure it all out.

“You can’t take pictures of our food” – Photo of the Day #44

"You can't take pictures of our food"

This is a nice spread of beets & ginger, alongside “vegan” pico de gallo at Whole Foods Boca Raton. People eat this stuff, I just like the pretty colors.

Now, what does the title have to do with anything? I almost got kicked out of the store for taking this photo! OF BEETS. If you don’t want people taking pics of insanely purple foods, don’t display them. This is the first time anyone has ever said anything to me about taking pictures of the food at Whole Foods. I must be giving away the secrets of how to make chopped beets mixed with ginger.

Everyone loves a hug – Photo of the Day #40

Everyone loves a hug

I love this candid shot of Kitty sleeping with one of our mice cuddled up next to his head. The fact that it looks like it’s hugging him is so adorable.

Let’s all talk about nothing – Photo of the Day #39

Let's all talk about nothing

These ladies were a great cadre of conversation tonight at our friendly Starbucks. They yapped almost endlessly the whole time we were there.

This is a lot more grainy than I wanted it to be as I was not paying attention to the fact that my lens was wide open at f/1.8 and introducing so much noise. I was more worried about why my remote wasn’t firing. Nikon, I like your wireless remote but PLEASE make these things work 360 degrees around the camera. having to be in front of it is absolutely stupid.

A mighty fine fire – Photo of the Day #38

A mighty fine fire

Took this on a whim in my bathroom with the lights off. The flame’s obviously not that big but I achieved a voluptuous flame by setting the camera to a 5 sec exposure and lightly blew on it from the left. I like the way it came out.

Fuzzy in blue – Photo of the Day #37

Fuzzy in blue

My beautiful girlfriend Jess from tonight’s visit to Wowies. I can’t remember if we were talking about eating too much or Australian Chippendales.

A lull in the conversation – Photo of the Day #36

A lull in the conversation

I took this at the Starbucks in Mizner Park tonight and it was a random shot to get. I like the candidness of the photo but not the fact that the table is in the forefront! Couldn’t do much about that since the woman noticed that I was taking pictures of them and got kind of mad at me.

Tonight is the night I also noticed that I’ve developed my first hot pixel in my D90. It’s barely noticeable in the above photo but was a very prominent red dot in many of my other pictures from tonight, which really irks me. I understand it can happen frequently at high ISOs. However, I’ve noticed it from 200 to 1600, at very different ISOs and shutter speeds. It never reared its head until today and I will keep a close eye on it from now on. I read that this is very common problem with the D90, we’ve never had this problem with our weathered Casio EXILIM EXZ750.

Quick, make me a drink – Photo of the Day #35

What can I make?

Quick candid shot of my friend Kelly behind the bar at the Irishmen, making up a new drink that she said tasted “good”. Then, about 6 hours later, I ask her if it was actually good and she said it was horrible. It was a mix of Grey Goose, Patron coffee-flavored tequila, and some Chambord. It sounded absolutely terrible from the get go.

This is the Project 365 photo for 16 January 2010.

Step away from the lights – Photo of the Day #34

Step to the light

This was a lucky shot I got on the way to the bar Friday night. These are the extremely out of focus lights on top of a Boca police cruiser. I had meant to get the lights in focus but didn’t remember that I had left my lens on manual focus. This is probably way better than what I would have gotten any way.

This is the Project 365 picture for 15 January 2010, just posting it late.
