These days, everyone’s out to make some cash on the Internet. Most people are pretty unsuccessful, myself included. It’s not that making money is all that difficult, it’s that getting the properly targeted market is difficult and this is what pulls in your revenue. My Google ads range from the generic dating ad to highly targeted ads for non-theistic/atheistic books or sites but it’s all too varied. Those who are looking to monetize themselves on the Internet go through the same process as everyone else and eventually find a method that works for them but it’s never an immediate pile of cash coming in. Some sites are now looking to change this by having revenue sharing options to members from ads. My girlfriend has been a part of a few sites like this and frankly, you’re no better off than if you try and use ads from ad networks to make money since click-throughs can vary wildly from month to month and thus, so does the income.
The QooForum is looking to change that in respects to forums. Many of us are on a few forums and we see the ads if they have any but we never see anything monetary from viewing these ads. At Qoo, once you sign up and get an AdSense account and start posting, you’re on your way to possibly sharing any income the site gets. Obviously, this very much supports greedy posters or postwhores. You have to have at least 50 posts before you’re considered for revenue sharing and even then, your odds of your AdSense code showing up — randomly — are no better than any other poster with 50 posts. As your post count climbs, you supposedly have a higher chance of your code showing and thus, possibility of more income. But there’s a hitch, there’s always a hitch. This only applies to threads you start, not how many posts you truly make. So while this helps thwart post whores, it doesn’t stop those who are thread whores and like to see their name all over a forum.
I think this method is better than a post free-for-all but still has the downfalls mentioned above. I do, however, think that Qoo is heading in the right direction with this method. On the forums I’m on, starting a thread has a meaning and a purpose, it’s not just for idle chatter and I think this is the strongest point of what QooForum is doing, it’s truly encouraging discussion and conversation more than trying to make money. But the other side of the coin for this is that people will always start meaningless threads in order to get their AdSense ID to show up in the ads and this can lead to a forum filled with fluff and posts that no one will ever read or contribute to.
I hope that QooForum takes the high road on this and the mods seriously ratchet down on thread whores and make sure that meaningful threads are plentiful and thread whores aren’t the richest in the kingdom.
