Christian intolerance among MySpace clones

So I came to work this morning and as usual, I started reading my normal Atheist blogs. I then came across this lovely post from The Friendly Atheist about a site called HisHolySpace.com (HHS) which is exactly what it sounds like: a Christian Myspace rip off. Now, since I work for a large web hosting company, I see these all the time and all of them fail in way or another so what sets this one apart from the rest? Christianism, that’s what!

Just going through the registration process is painful enough but then you have extremely backwards thinking and double standards going on. Take the tidbit of information on the first page alone:

HisHolySpace.com is an online Christian Community that is structured on the Core Essential Doctrines of Christianity. The Bible itself reveals those doctrines that are essential to the Christian faith. They are as follows: (1) the Deity of Christ (2) Salvation by Grace (3) Resurrection of Christ, and (4) the gospel. These are the doctrines the Bible says are necessary. Though there are many other important doctrines, these four are the only ones that are declared by Scripture to be essential…

I never realized that Christ was a deity, Jesus Christ was merely a person and a prophet not a deity. Making him into a deity would mean people would worship him and go against the Ten Commandments. Worshipping Jesus as a deity goes directly in opposition of Exodus 20:3 :

Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

And since when has the resurrection of Christ been a core doctrine of Christianity? When I went to church, I must have slept through all those sermons because I don’t remember it at all. I also missed where the reverend at hand said his resurrection was essential to the understanding of the Christian ethos. It only gets more interesting:

A non-regenerate person, or a false religion, will deny one or more of these essential doctrines.

Just wow. How narrow-minded and intolerant. I guess they think that Kabbalism is a false religion too, just don’t go telling some intelligent, well-learned Rabbis that.

HisHolySpace.com separates itself from other online religious community sites, by only allowing those religions that follow these Core Christian Essentials, to be promoted on the site. Anyone from any religion is welcome to join HisHolySpace.com. But if your religion and/or your beliefs fall outside the realm of the above-mentioned Core Essentials, and it is your intention to promote your religion and/or beliefs on HHS, you may be in violation of the site rules, which could result in the cancelation of your membership.

I guess you can join if you do not believe in the Christian “core doctrines” but don’t ever say that or you’ll be kicked off! Saying “anyone from any religion can join” and following it with “if your beliefs fall outside our narrow scope, your account will get cancelled” doesn’t really mean everyone is welcome and you promote tolerance. Let’s get into the site itself and how backwards it continues to be.

Case in point: Rank User. I have no idea how often this is actually used on MySpace as not only have I never used it, I don’t know anyone that has in the two years I’ve been on MySpace but anyway that’s beside the point. On HHS, instead of ranking users, apparently you get to JUDGE them. Excuse me? Doesn’t judging someone (something Christians are taught not to do) usually carry a negative connotation in any social circles? I just don’t understand “Christians” like this. I was raised devout Presbyterian and if my mother ever found out I was judging someone or prejudicing against someone, I was in huge trouble because it’s against the Christian ethos as laid down in the Bible. But apparently, the people behind HHS have no problems whatsoever in welcoming judgement against its’ users and they more than welcome you to do it. I guess their version of the Bible says this is OK. Then you have such atrocities as “Add to Congregation” instead of “Add to Friends” or “No Gossip IM” instead of “Instant Message”. I mean, No Gossip IM? What is this, a Communist regime? I understand trying to seperate yourself from the rest of the clones but come on, who’s going to buy this drivel? Everyone, including Christians, gossip and no one can truthfully deny they do not do it.

Even though I’m not a Christian, I find this highly offensive. I think even if I was a Christian I would never visit this site and continue using the sinful and tempestuous MySpace because at least they know what goes on and they do not try to cover up. It seems they want to actually push Christianist values down your throat instead of trying to cultivate and market a healthy Christian image. I haven’t made a Satanist MySpace clone so I can use it to my own evil ends and make people feel like they need to repent after logging off. It just seems that in many parts of the country, especially in the South, people are being taught Christianist values instead of the old Christian values that have been taught for the last 2,000 years. They have all of the outward trappings of a Christian but once you get them to open up, you find out it’s all a thin veener and there’s a regular ol’ sinner underneath there that really has no idea what they believe or why they “believe” they’re Christian. Is this how we want our children to start progressing through life? As one dimensional robots, devoid of any humanity or self-understanding?

I just don’t understand this at all.

  1. The thing I find interesting is that they’re completely contradicting themselves.

    “No Gossip IM” tries to be in line with the doctrines (although they’re pretty much saying “You can’t be human”, like you said), but then “Rating” your fellow “Christians” goes completely against Christian rule.

    This is my problem with Christianity overall — the consistent contradiction. I’d rather stand up, say I’m not sure what to believe in (I myself am Agnostic), and go about my day than be a hypocrite preaching one thing, saying I believe in another, and doing a third.

  2. Many Christians know what the rest of the herd knows, many Christians do what the herd does, they have no reason to think for themsleves. Everything is a contradiction with them because they in fact have no idea what they should be doing instead of what they are doing.

    Trying to make them realize it is hard though.

  3. This ‘article’ proves that neither one of you has any idea what the Bible really has to say!

    John 1:1 tells us that Jesus is God in the flesh!

    You have no idea what a real Christian is… and I don’t blame you as there are a lot of people out there claiming to be real Christians, and they don’t even realize they are not.
    Real Christian do think for themselves. And we think that worshiping God is the right thing to do.
    Much like you atheists and agnostics think being intolerant to Christians is the right thing to do!

    You say we are intolerant but I listen to blog after blog and post after post of how you talk about us. Shame on you for your intolerance!
    You say live and let live but you do all you can to put us down because we serve a Risen King!
    Why? To get your jollies?
    What if what I believe is real? What if hell is real? Do you want to risk spending eternity in a place YOU have chosen to be?
    I say Repent, Trust in Christ alone or Perish.
    It is your choice not Gods.
    For he said it best in John 3:16

  4. I’m going to say this first: I’m not a Christian, I’m not Atheist, and I’m definitely not an Agnostic. I firmly know where my philosophy lies.

    I’m guessing you didn’t read much of the article at all because I’m talking specifically the site is extremely intolerant and rather backwards in its view of Christianity. It states that Christ is a deity. If this were true, it would be violating a Commandment. Jesus Christ is “the son of God”, not a deity into himself. For this to be true, Exodus 20:3 would be completely invalidated and unimportant — and probably left out of the Bible entirely. It seems you too subscribe to this thought as Christ as a deity but he’s not a Godhead, Jesus was nothing more than a Jewish messiah. John 1:1 says Jesus is God in the flesh but then the entirety of the New Testament is about Jesus worship and less about God worship. His name in Hebrew is not Yahweh but Yashuah proving he is not God in the flesh.

    If “real” Christians think that worshiping God is the right thing to do, why did you just make a whole comment entirely focused on Jesus? Worshiping God means just that: worshiping that giant ethereal guy in the sky not his dead “son”. By the looks of it, I’m not the one who is confused as I can clearly separate God from Jesus and vice versa, something almost all Christians have trouble doing. Christianity is monotheistic meaning it has one godhead and one only. For Christ to be a god, he is either a dualism or not a god, there are no other options.

    As for intolerance, most non-theists are very tolerant of Christianity until you try shoving it down someone’s throat like you did at the end of your comment. Why are you trying to convert me? Why do you care? Why not follow the word of God and stone me to death instead ( Deuteronomy 13:6-10 ) ? I’d rather be stoned to death than listen to droning about conversion, really, save your breath. If what you believe is real, that’s fine. If Hell exists, that’s fine too. Your God was not so “tolerant” of people whom did not believe in him in the Old Testament. In fact, he was very fond of killing non-believers himself and even sent vassals or other messengers to do it for him. That doesn’t sound very tolerant to me. In fact, it sounds downright tyrannical.

    What if hell isn’t real? I guess I won’t be going to a non-existent place eternally on fire that Christians lifted from Greek and Hebrew mythology. Gehenna? Yeah. Sheol? You bet. Neither were really “hell” in Jewish theodicy and then Christians combined them and invented a new place for sinners to go to. How am I to venture forth in the afterlife to a place that Christians themselves borrowed from somewhere else that in the end, abandoned it as a place of punishment anyway?

  5. James,

    You have the knowledge written by man, and such is foolishness with GOD.

    I am not trying to make you a Christian. I just want you to have all the facts to make a good choice. After that it is up to you what you believe or don’t believe.
    Your facts on the Bible are not correct.

    John 10:30 I and my Father are one.

    Kinda like water. It is just one element but can have three perfect forms.

  6. You know, that doesn’t even make sense:

    You have the knowledge written by man, and such is foolishness with GOD.

    The Bible was written by man so is that too foolishness? The Bible is God’s logos as ascribed by man. My facts on the Bible are quite correct because they’re not facts, they’re taken straight from Scripture. Now, if my “facts” are wrong, then the Scripture is wrong since I’m only using a single source. If my facts are so incorrect, please show me a source that states they’re incorrect. In fact, show me two or three and I might believe you. But given my library, I think you may be hard pressed to do so.

  7. You said if I could find 3…..

    1 Corinthians 3:19 (New King James Version)
    New King James Version (NKJV)
    19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their own craftiness”;[a]

    1 Corinthians 2:14 (New King James Version)
    New King James Version (NKJV)
    14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because

    they are spiritually discerned.

    Corinthians 1:25 (New King James Version)
    New King James Version (NKJV)
    25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the

    weakness of God is stronger than men.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    8 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written:
    “ I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
    And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”[a]
    20 Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks[b] foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
    not fitting;
    Proverbs 1 (New King James Version)
    New King James Version (NKJV)
    Proverbs 1
    The Beginning of Knowledge
    1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:
    2 To know wisdom and instruction,
    To perceive the words of understanding,
    3 To receive the instruction of wisdom,
    Justice, judgment, and equity;
    4 To give prudence to the simple,
    To the young man knowledge and discretion—
    5 A wise man will hear and increase learning,
    And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,
    6 To understand a proverb and an enigma,
    The words of the wise and their riddles.
    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,
    But fools despise wisdom and instruction.
    Shun Evil Counsel
    8 My son, hear the instruction of your father,
    And do not forsake the law of your mother;
    9 For they will be a graceful ornament on your head,
    And chains about your neck.
    10 My son, if sinners entice you,
    Do not consent.
    11 If they say, “Come with us,
    Let us lie in wait to shed blood;
    Let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;
    12 Let us swallow them alive like Sheol,[a]
    And whole, like those who go down to the Pit;
    13 We shall find all kinds of precious possessions,
    We shall fill our houses with spoil;
    14 Cast in your lot among us,
    Let us all have one purse”—
    15 My son, do not walk in the way with them,
    Keep your foot from their path;
    16 For their feet run to evil,
    And they make haste to shed blood.
    17 Surely, in vain the net is spread
    In the sight of any bird;
    18 But they lie in wait for their own blood,
    They lurk secretly for their own lives.
    19 So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain;
    It takes away the life of its owners.
    The Call of Wisdom
    20 Wisdom calls aloud outside;
    She raises her voice in the open squares.
    21 She cries out in the chief concourses,[b]
    At the openings of the gates in the city
    She speaks her words:
    22 “ How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity?
    For scorners delight in their scorning,
    And fools hate knowledge.
    23 Turn at my rebuke;
    Surely I will pour out my spirit on you;
    I will make my words known to you.
    24 Because I have called and you refused,
    I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded,
    25 Because you disdained all my counsel,
    And would have none of my rebuke,
    26 I also will laugh at your calamity;
    I will mock when your terror comes,
    27 When your terror comes like a storm,
    And your destruction comes like a whirlwind,
    When distress and anguish come upon you.
    28 “ Then they will call on me, but I will not answer;
    They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me.
    29 Because they hated knowledge
    And did not choose the fear of the LORD,
    30 They would have none of my counsel
    And despised my every rebuke.
    31 Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way,
    And be filled to the full with their own fancies.
    32 For the turning away of the simple will slay them,
    And the complacency of fools will destroy them;
    33 But whoever listens to me will dwell safely,
    And will be secure, without fear of evil.”
    Please, look and see for your self that GOD is good and merciful to those HE loves.
  8. See, this is dependent on God loving them. He punishes the children of Judah even though they are one of the 12 tribes of Israel and those ARE God’s chosen people.
    As for all the passages, remember those came from a book written by many many people and not by God himself. This goes back to my point of “the knowledge written by man” and “foolishness”. God did not write the Bible in any way, only man wrote the words contained therein. The fact that there are so many inconsistencies in the Bible is proof that it was written by more than one person and no single author could ever have written it.
