Mayor of Boca Raton rejects work-force housing
December 17th, 2007 • chatter
I can’t imagine why either. The Sun Sentinel reports that Mayor Abrams voted against the law that would help introduce work-force housing into Boca’s rather upscale — but not actually upscale — apartment real estate market. He and his cohorts state the city would be losing valuable industrial land. Hey Abrams, how about bulldozing this ugly ass golf course surrounding my complex and building some houses on it? You guys only spent a few million dollars 2 years ago to buy and all you’ve done is let the grass grow. There’s a ton of open land out in West Boca that’s free as well, why not build there? We’ve got enough industry already, how about letting REAL people live here for once?
Here’s a little background from those not in the ‘know’ about Boca Raton. It’s expensive to live here. Comparatively, it’s more expensive to live here than in San Diego or Orange. But by expensive, I mean ridiculously. Once IBM left 20 years ago, most of the rich yuppies hung around and let their aging Ferraris transform into new Ferraris. Or Exiges. Or Lambo Gallardos. Or a hundred other metal penal extensions. This is a very rich city, due in no part to the high numbering Jewish population and all the rich New Yorkers who live off their credit cards. Now, all these rich fuddy-duddies think they’re shit don’t stink, to use common vernacular, so they make living here hard for everyone else. This means that the in-bad-shape condos next door to where I live are overpriced by about $600 a month and a “golf course view” where I live costs nearly $1700 a month (as previously mentioned, there is no golf course any more). Now for me to live in the crappy condos next door, I need to make $4000/mo just to live there and my girlfriend’s income cannot count. So I need to make nearly $50,000/yr to live in condos that still are not fully repaired from a hurricane 2 years ago. Or I can live in Mizner Park where the rent hovers around $4000/mo for a box apartment the size of my bedroom. Why? It’s ritzy. There’s affordable housing all the way on the west side of Boca but it’s mostly a crapshoot…from Deerfield to Delray. Thanks to people with deep pockets, regular 1300 sq ft ranch houses costs as much as a Ferrari Enzo and is three times as old. No joke.
Now Mayor Abrams says we don’t need work-force affordable housing. I’ve said, on numerous occasions, to realtors that they apparently do not want normal people living in Boca and this now proves my point. The planned work-force housing is going up at Broken Sound, Boca’s oldest golf course and is a pretty fancy area. He doesn’t want normal people invading the lives of the rich even though those people run the city and everything in it. Why can’t we have affordable housing, Mr. Abrams? I don’t care about loss of industrial land, there’s PLENTY of it here, I can point out acres of it just on Military Trail, all undeveloped. We don’t have any panhandlers in Boca because you’ve mandated the police kick’em all out. We’ve got one ghetto where a large portion of the city’s lower class lives. We’ve got green grass year round to keep up appearances and the damage from Hurricane Wilma was cleared up in a week, just to make it all look good. I some how doubt Abrams was out there picking up limbs and hauling debris after the hurricane, I know who was: lower paid work-force employees. I was out there too, cleaning my apartment complex up. Since there was no power, it’s not like I had anything better to do.
We’ve got all these dedicated and hardworking people wanting to live here but they can’t because it’s too expensive. Abrams wants to make that even more difficult for everyone else because it’s not going to make his pockets any fatter. How deplorable.
